Description
Fabric weaving started in Kyoto in 5th centry, even before Emperor Koubu established Heian-Kyo Era. It is said to have developed since he had encouraged professionals in current Nishijin area to make luxuarious clothes such as Aya (twill) and Nishiki (brocade). After Onin War ended in 1467, the professional weavers who had spread to different regions came back to Kyoto and restarted their business near the place where the camp of the West squad lead by Yamana Souzen was located. Since then, the north western region of Kyoto prospered with weaving had begun to be called "Nishijin", named after the camp (jin) of the West (Nishi) squad during the war. There are still remains of Souzen's house in the area.
