Description
"Wherever they go, they cross to return. The bridge is called Modori-bashi (Returning bridge) " As in a poem of Izumi-Shikibu, a poet in Heian-Kyo era, Ichijyo-Modori-bashi Bridge has been located at Ichijyo-Horikawa since Heian-Kyo era separating Rakuchu (Inside Kyoto) and Rakugai (Outside Kyoto). In December 918, when a poetry and history teacher Miyoshi Kiyotsura died, his son Jozo came all the way back to Kyoto from Kishu-Kumano. When he arrived, the funeral procession was just crossing the bridge. As he cried leaning against his father's coffin and prayed to God and Buddha for his revival, Kiyotsura came back alive for a moment and they had a chance to talk.According to this legend, Modori-bashi has been said to be a place where the dead return.
